Fun Fact!
Did you know that Colorado Springs is often referred to as "Little London" because of its historical connection to the British elite, particularly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The nickname originated from the city's early development, which was influenced by a wealthy British businessman named William Jackson Palmer, the founder of Colorado Springs.
Palmer, who was originally from the UK, envisioned Colorado Springs as a beautiful, cultured, and refined city, similar to London, but set against the backdrop of the majestic Rocky Mountains. He had a strong interest in bringing a touch of European charm to the American West and worked to attract a certain class of society that would help him realize this vision. He also imported British-style architecture, such as elegant Victorian homes, into the city’s design.
Additionally, Palmer's influence and connections helped bring British tourists, investors, and settlers to the area, further cementing the association with London. Many of the city’s early elite residents were British or had strong ties to the UK, and they often referred to Colorado Springs as “Little London” due to its refined atmosphere, gardens, and high-society lifestyle that seemed to mirror the elegance of London.
Thus, the nickname "Little London" reflects the city's historical British connections and its attempt to emulate the refined culture and sophistication of the British capital.
I have never personally heard anyone refer Colorado to Little London, however, I have heard that some call it that!
