Fun Fact!

Did you know The "Front Range" gets its name from early explorers and settlers who approached the Rocky Mountains from the east.

Here's why it's called the "Front" Range:

  • When coming from the Great Plains, the Front Range is the first (or front) major mountain range that you encounter.

  • It's the "front line" of the Rockies visible from the plains—basically, the first dramatic rise in elevation heading west.

  • Early settlers and travelers on the plains saw this massive wall of mountains and referred to it as the "Front Range" of the Rockies.

So it's not "front" in terms of being the most important—it's "front" geographically from the eastern perspective.
